Jeep DJ Surrey Gala Package

Jeep Surrey GalaSurrey Gala Package - 1959-1964 DJ-3A

In 1959, a Surrey Gala model was introduced. This model was intended for use by resorts, usually for rentals. They usually came in pink, although light blue and light green were also available. It came with a standard striped fabric top, as well as a fabric cover for what was advertised as a "Continental tire mount."

The Jeep DJ came in two basic models, the DJ-3A and the DJ-5. The DJ-3A was a flat fender Jeep primarily designed primarily as a postal Jeep and was also designed as the Jeep Surrey Gala.   The Jeep DJ was similar to the CJ-3A except it was two wheel drive model.

Jeep Surrey Gala Models

The Surrey Gala was a variant of the DJ-3 Dispatcher Jeep. The DJ-3 was designed as a delivery vehicle and mail truck and performed honorably in that role. The Surrey Gala was a pink painted DJ with a frilly striped top that looks more like a toy or a golf cart than a Jeep. Its basic function was to serve as a vacation transport at resorts or as a delivery vehicle for small shops. It's also reported that Elvis owned one.

Designation DJ-3A
Engine 4-cyl L-head
Power 60hp@4000rpm
Wheelbase 80in

DJ-3A
The DJ-3A was introduced in 1955. It used the body style of the older CJ-3A, along with the 3A's L-134 engine. Unlike the CJ-3A, It had a column shifted three-speed manual transmission. It was offered with many different body options including a soft top, hard top, or even a full van body.

The DJ-3A was produced from 1956 until 1965. In 1965, the DJ-5 was introduced and became the postal Jeep most people recognize today.  Many  of the DJ-5 Jeeps are still in use today in rural America.  Jeep also produced a longer version of the DJ-5 called the DJ-6 and was produced from 1965 until 1968. The DJ-5 was made by Jeep into the early 70s and production continued under AM General.  DJ production years were:  DJ-3A - 1956 through 1965.  DJ-5 - 1965 through 1972.  DJ-6 - 1965 through 1968.
