Fuel Mud Gripper MT
Mud Tire
From the manufacturers of one of
the popular Fuel Offroad Wheels comes a new MT tire on
the trail, the FUEL Mud Gripper M/T Tire. This stylish
offroad tire boasts several characteristics that places
it in a very strategic position to compete with several
of the high dollar large wheel sized tires on the
market.
Positive performance, stability, durability and handling
both on and offroad is attained from a 3-ply sidewall
that helps both handling stability and puncture
resistance offroad while giving the larger sized mud
tire a sporty-like feel on the road. Traction both on
and off road is aided by a network of sipes across all
of the lugs in it's large footprint.
First
generation Fuel Mud Grippers (pictured to the right)
looked remarkably like the Toyo M/T tire, so much so
that we wondered who exactly was manufacturing the Fuel
Gripper MT or where the design came from. However
second generation released in 2014 gave the Fuel Mud
Gripper MT it's own unique style and tread design, which
appealed to our aggressive side. We also learned
that the Fuel Mud Gripper MT is manufactured by HONGKONG
Tri-Ace Tire Co., LTD, a tire supplier in China and we
are glad to see they designed their own tread rather
than mimic (is that the right word?) another
manufacturers tread design.
Tread life and long term
durability of the tire is decent as reported by several
users of this tires we spoke to with one user of the
original tire design at about 22,000 miles with about a
50% tread wear reported at the time of this article.
A few others at lesser mileage but happy with the
overall wear and performance.
Offroad performance on the trail
was better than average with the aggressive tread design
and siped large lugs finding traction in mud, snow and
on the mountains trails where our friends had used these
tires. On the rocks the rubber compound had held
together well enough to earn an overall approval of a
user we spoke to who had been to Rausch Creek twice on
these tires with no damage suffered in either trip.
3-ply sidewall are protected by a functional wrap-around
tread design giving the Fuel an awesome profile that
serve to find additional traction in the deeper mud.
On the road, noise was noticeable
but tolerable for a MT tire. Wet weather traction
was decent as reported, which we chalk up to the sipes.
As a side note, we feel that sipes make a noticeable
difference in overall traction both on and offroad and
we are pleased to see more and more manufacturers
incorporating a siped tread design into their mud tires.
