The Poughkeepsie Gulch Trail is located due north of Silverton, just a couple of miles Southeast of Ouray. To get to the trailhead from Silverton, take US 550 North approximately 17 miles. Turn right (East) onto CR 18, also known as Engineer Pass Rd. The Poughkeepsie trailhead isn’t actually until you pass Waypoint PG01-06, with a right turn (South) onto CR18A. Ranging in elevation from around 9,000 feet to 12,500 feet, the Poughkeepsie Gulch Trail takes you through . . . uh . . . Poughkeepsie Gulch, along the Uncompahgre River, then up to Lake Como. At Waypoint PG01-10 there’s an optional ledge climb to the right. Shortly after, just past PG01-11 is a long, steep climb up loose shale rock. This stuff is “slipperier” than it looks! It’s best to maintain a steady speed, while trying to avoid excessive wheel spin. A ways further, just past Waypoint GP01-15 are some optional ledges and a hill climb. The trail passes Lake Como on the left, and shortly thereafter comes to its end. From here, you have a few options to get back to Silverton. To the right are Corkscrew Gulch, which will put you back on US 550; and Cement Creek down CR 10 into Silverton. To the left is California Gulch to Animas Forks and then down CR 2 into Silverton. The Poughkeepsie Gulch Trail is just under 6 miles one way and takes between 2 hours to 3 hours to reach the southern end.
