The Chinamen's Gulch Trail is located a little over 4 miles SSE of Buena Vista, CO (which is on US Hwy 285, about 70 miles West of Colorado Springs). To get to the trailhead from Buena Vista, take US 285 South 2.4 miles. Turn left (East) on US 24 and go 0.9 miles. Turn right (South) on CO 301 and go 1.6 miles. Immediately after passing the "Prison Property" signs on either side of the road, turn left, go through the wire gate, and through the fenced corridor. After going through the second gate, there’s lots of room to air down and get ready for the trail. Ranging in elevation from 8,000 feet to less than 9,000 feet, this is a relatively "flat" trail by Colorado standards, with a variety of scenery. Rock hunters will be amazed at the amount and types of quartz crystals to be seen on the way in (and out) between waypoints CG04 and CG06. At waypoint CG08, there’s a rock pile on the right to "play" on. The main obstacle is between waypoints CG09 and CG10. There’s a 4+ foot boulder wall to climb; the left side being at the most extreme angle. Don’t be fooled here, none of the approaches are easy! Even though the right side is much less steep, it’s still challenging. If you take the right fork at waypoint CG13, you will come upon some mine ruins. This is a nice open, flat spot with some shade to stop for lunch. It’s also "off" of the main trail, so you won’t block other groups. Between waypoints CG19 and CG23, there’s some discussion as to whether any of this portion of this loop encroaches on private land. As long as you are "treading lightly", you probably won’t encounter any problems. However, if you would rather bypass this section of the trail, just take a left at waypoint CG19 and it will dump you out at waypoint CG07. The Chinamen’s Gulch Trail is a little over 7.5 miles round trip and takes between 3 hours to 4 hours to complete.
