This trail offers views of one of the most scenic basins in the San Juan Mountains.
Located in Southwest Colorado, American Basin ATV Trail #3314 is a dream come true for any ATV enthusiast. The 3.5 mile long trail offers a simply amazing view of the San Juan Mountains, and there is plenty of moderate terrain to keep you and your ATV happy. While the trail is certainly not exceptionally rugged or challenging, it does have it's rougher parts, and riding your ATV at a such a high altitude (the trail peaks at l4,000 feet) is an interesting experience all in itself.
The trail begins near an old mine, and then heads upwards to Sloan Lake. From Sloan Lake, you ride your ATV to the gorgeous view of Handies Peak and the areas around it. The view is simply breathtaking. The trail is open from July until October. Hikers, Horses, Motorcycles, and other non ATV vehicles are all permitted on American Basin ATV Trail #3314, so make sure that you are courteous to all those you encounter on the trail. While you are riding your ATV on the trail, remember not to deviate from the path at all, because you could possibly damage the Tundra in the area, which happens to be extremely delicate.
To get to American Basin ATV Trail #3314 from Lake city, head south on Highway 149 for 2.5 miles. After that, turn right on to Lake San Cristobal. From there take the paved road for four miles, then take the dirt road for 16 miles. Turn left when you see a sign that says Cinnamon Pass/American Basin. This road will lead you straight to the trailhead. Once you get to the trail, remember to be safe, respect the land, and have fun riding your ATV!
