The waterproof unit offers 22 channels and 5 watts of transmit power, so you can contact friends or rescue crews from up to 14 miles away (line of sight) over GMRS channels or up to 2 miles over FRS channels. The 530HCx is also equipped with a built-in electronic compass that provides bearing information even when you're standing still, along with a barometric altimeter that tracks changes in pressure to pinpoint your precise altitude. You can even use the altimeter to plot barometric pressure over time, which can help you keep an eye on changing weather conditions. And thanks to the NOAA weather radio, you'll know well in advance when a storm is advancing.
Perhaps the most important feature, however, is the crystal-clear 256-color TFT display, which clearly shows attributes from the built-in basemap, including lakes, rivers, cities, interstates, national and state highways, railroads, and coastlines--in short, a host of helpful details for your outdoor adventures. Users can also expand the mapping possibilities via the microSD card slot, which accepts cards preloaded with MapSource data for your land and sea excursions. Just insert a MapSource card with detailed street maps and the Rino 530HCx will provide step-by-step or turn-by-turn directions to your destination.
Other details include a USB interface, 500 waypoints and 50 routes, a hunt/fish calendar, hands-free voice activation (requires separately sold headset), a voice scrambler, and external temperature recording. The Rino 530HCx, which includes a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that runs for up to 14 hours per charge, measures 2.3 by 5.1 by 1.8 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a one-year warranty.

I use this device for navigating around the woods at night training hunting hounds. I also use it for snowmobiling, hiking, and deer hunting. It is an excellent device, and very accurate. I use it with topo maps and compasses. It is very reliable. The battery lasts for fifteen hours. This device will significantly add to your ability to navigate wild places. The two way and weather radio is useful as well. The included map is not all that good, so you should buy either the topo or highway programs available from Mapsource. The altimeter is very accurate. There is a main menu which has a variety of features to set up the device to your liking. There are even some included goodies like a stopwatch, a calender, and a calculator. A compass is included, which is very handy because when you want to go back to a waypoint, it shows you the actual direction to go. I am glad I have it but will add one caveat. Do not abandon your topo map and compass. I was raised with maps and compasses in a variety of venues I continue to use them in conjunction with my Rino.

I've had other handheld navigation units before and I've used GMRS / Family Talk radios before but this GPS combine them both to create some great features. The polling feature is great. Offroad these GPS's are very good. I use mine for trail riding and marking waypoints on trails, communications as well as for geocaching. The Geocaching features are great. I'm able to download coordinates direct from the websites to GPS via USB cable. I've got Topo maps and they have decent detail. Easy to use menu. Not so good documentation but I was able to figure most simply by using it. Batter life is very good. The only issue I see with it is it's necessity to route me to the largest highway in the area that may be miles out of the say even if I tell it the shortest route. For example I tell it to take me home (my preset waypoint) and it sends me past my turn into the neighborhood (I live 500 feet off that turn), down the road to a major highway and then it routes me back up the same road and turns into the neighborhood. What the hell??? Unless it's absolutely necessary, I don't use it for highway navigation. Totally useless and the resome it get an 8 rather than a 10. Maybe if I spent 150 on street maps it would navigate better but instead of experimenting with my money maybe I'll get a TomTom for that. But that's not what I bought it. I got it for offroad navigation, communication and geocaching and with those points it does great. So 8 out of 10.

Would be worth a few extra bucks to have the option of purchasing the unit with factory installed street map or topo software chips.I have read other reviews that tell of a lot of trouble installing it yourself. Physically it is a simple matter of inserting the chip. The problem it seems is with the software and tech support.

Bought this for Geocaching. Works great! Lots of fun, easy to use. I use the 2-way radio with another, smaller 2-way radio made by Cobra and I get great range. The Weather Band is great to have, I use that occasionally. Highly recommended GPS. Just a little expensive.
