Detroit Locker
Probably the most durable design available, these are the king of traction differentials. Usually causes banging and clunking, but gives 100% lock-up whenever traction is needed. Unlocks when negotiating a turn so that the outer wheel can turn faster than the ring gear and the inside wheel, with no needed interaction from the driver. New Sof-Locker design has damping device to reduce banging and clunking, and includes a carrier case that is stronger than stock except in 2 applications, where the original factory carrier case is used. Only the 10.5" 14 bolt truck and the Nissan V6 designs use the factory carrier case and these cases are both very strong. (aftermarket) 1-year warranty

Had this in the rear of my land rover discovery for about 7 years. What a diff. no need to activate but did have to upgrade to better shafts, but would have done that no matter what. Unit does disengage louder now but not too much. I would buy this as a rear diff on any vehicle used off road. As for a front i've never used it, i use a true trac, and i love that as well. over all i would buy any eaton product

Installed one of the Detroit Softlocker in my CJ a few years ago. Previously I had 2 Jeeps with the earlier style Detroit. I've also had An EZ DEtroit Locker. With the current Softlocker I'm happy to say that it has performed incredibly well especially when I compare it to the previous generation Detroit. I get the kind of traction I'd expect from a locker but the Softlocker is so much better behaved. I get next to no banging or clunking like the older style and almost no detectable backlash even with my manual transmission. On the road behaves well enough that I can relax a bit. I only feel it move me around when it's aired down like when I'm heading from trailhead to another trailhead. When I air up and crank the shocks up a few notches (adjustable Rancho 5000's), it great on the road. If I were to consider a locker for a daily driver, I'd consider this one or maybe an OX. But as far as automatic lockers are concerned, this one is the cat's ass.

I've had the Softlocker for about a year so far in my daily driver which sees about once a month f offroad. Been very happy with it in all aspects. Prior to installing it in my daily driver I was a little concerned about how it was going to behave on pavement. I had a detroit tru-trac prior to this and wasn't sure how going to a full Detroit Locker was going to be but I was surprised that there wasn't that much of a difference. Its a great locker option for the price with few worries. Happy with the handling on the road.

Overall I'm happy with this locker. I did reading ahead of buying this and knew what I was getting. Although plenty of people use a detroit locker in a daily driver, I recommend against it especialy if you are living in an area that gets snow.

Gets me there and back. It's one tough pig, I've beat on mine over some nasty rocks and I'm surprised I havn't broken my shafts but the detroit is still happy. It throws out some occasional noise but hell, I like that!
