Ben's 1950 Willys CJ3A
My name is Ben I'm 55 yrs. old and live in Spokane Wa .and I have a couple of Willys 4x4's I'd like to submit.
First one is a 1950 CJ3a i've been playing with for 16 years. It has as 225 v6, axle upgrades and a lower 4.86 lo range transfer case among many other things.
Second Willys is a 1955 window Delivery that i've owned for 18 yrs. It has a '78 Jeep Cherokee chassis and as many other Cherokee parts on it that I could swap.
You have a great website and i will be coming back often. thanks Ben
I have kept it all 'JEEP'. It's a mix of CJ running gear with many after market upgrades and a classic 1950 CJ3a body with many little modifications. Some comfort items are; XJ power steering, CJ5 elec. linkage type wipers, '84 Cherokee bucket seats and stock heater. These really make it a capable all-weather trail rig too. With a 72/1 low range gearing and a 2 MPH at 1500 RPM's slow speed, it is very control-able in the rough stuff, yet will travel at 50/55 mph and not strain the V6 motor. There are many little details like-- swing away tire carrier rear bumper, tow bar setup and wiring plug in grill for easy towing light connection. Between frame rail exhaust; starts with 231 v6 passenger car manifolds with two 2" into one single 2-1/2" muffler and tail pipe. All mandrel bent, heavy gauge pipe. Cooling is with a GM Monza v6 cross-flow radiator and aux. pusher fan. Transmission is a T90 3 speed with hydraulic clutch. The Spicer model 18 transfer case has been modified with an O'Brien 4.86 lo range gear and stock E-brake has been removed. Hydraulic line lock added to rear brake line . Front axle differential is a '82 wide track CJ5 D30 with factory disc brakes. Warn axles and their internal hub conversion along with a locker and 5.38 gears. The rear axle is a '70 CJ5 heavy tube, offset D44 30 spline. Warn's full floater axle kit, disc brakes, internal hubs, a Detroit locker and 5.38 gears. Rear hubs are great for flat towing behind my Willys wagon. The springs are flexy long leaf Holbrook units. There five sipped 32x9.50 Super Swamper TSL on 7" CJ5 wheels. For added ground clearance I raised the motor, trans. and t.c. and frenched the spring hangers into the frame. This helped give a nearly flat profile across the frame rails. Other details to improve ground clearance include shaved pumpkins, custom hi clearance spring plates, flipped tie-rod, custom rock sliders and bumpers which give a ride height equal to 34" tires without the big tire problems.
