Centralia Pennsylvania
These were taken June 26th of 2005,
by Daimon Paul of Lebanon Pa.
While on the way to Centralia me and
my dad traveled through Ashland
where the bank thermometer said it was 94 degrees.
well when we got all the way to
the cracks in old Rt. 61 it felt like at least 105
degrees,
and we were sweating like we were in a
sauna. Because it was so hot
there wasn't as much steam coming out of the cracks.
Summer is definitely not the
best time of year to visit the town that is definitely
the hottest in Pa.

Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery. To the far right
of this cemetery is the burning hillside at the south
side of town. |
This is part of the most visible area of
devastation. Its been one of the most photographed
due to the lack of vegetation, constant heat and the
occasional steam and smoke that rises from this area. |
A lone dead tree standing atop a
hillside.
|
From the large barren area where it currently burns
below, a few home can be seen in the distance. |
Another perspective of the burning
hillside.
|
A closer view of one of the few
remaining homes, which is still occupied in this
picture.
|
The reason a section of Rt. 61 is
closed.
|
As if to almost demonstrate the heat coming out of
the ground, people will throw dead tree branches in the
crack to see it become super heated from the gas and
burn. |

This is the blocked off north side
of Rt. 61.
