Centralia Mine Fire
Smoke rises out of the ground, the smell of sulfur is in the air, the ground collapses as homes are destroyed. Science fiction? Think again.

Flying Turns at Knoebels

What is Flying Turns?  Flying Turns is a customized version of an old standard coaster-type ride.  Knoebels is currently building our own version of a "Classic" wooden ride. This is a roller coaster like ride where you sit in a train and roll down a wood track much like a bobsled run. Construction had begun back in January of 2006 and is modeled after a similar ride designed by John Norman Bartlett and John Miller in the 1920s. The ride concept is similar to a modern steel bobsled roller coaster, however the Flying Turns will be made of wood, like the original rides.  Here are some photos of the ride during it's construction phase during the summer of 2006.  Currently it is still under construction.   The layout of the Flying Turns at Knoebels is most similar to the original ride that was located at Riverview Park in Chicago, Illinois (1935-1967, originally constructed for 1933-34 Chicago World's Fair).  We look forward to reviewing this ride!

Flying Turns Facts:
Maximum Height: 50'
Length: 1300'
Maximum Speed: 35 fps, 24 mph
Trains: 2 people per car, 5 cars

Pictures of the work in progress can be seen in a specially dedicated Knoebels' web site, www.flyingturnsproject.com.
