Lancaster County in Pennsylvania has been a favorite destination of travelers literally for centuries.  Many who travel to the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch Country take Rt. 30 heading west from the populated cities and towns along the east coast.  For nearly a century a well known, very recognizable landmark called Dutch Haven has been welcoming visitors to Amish Country.  Referred to by many as the area’s oldest visitor landmark this place introduced them to the now famous local treat called Shoo-Fly Pie.  Many travelers make Dutch Haven their first stop and for good reason.  Dutch Haven is known as "The Home of the Shoo Fly Pie" and was once the place that would have first introduced tourists to this local treat.

Dutch Haven, built back in the early 1920’s as a small luncheonette, did not originally have the distinct landmark revolving windmill, which was later added by the 2nd owner Roy Weaver.  But over the past 70 years as tourism to this area grew, so did the popularity of the Shoo Fly Pies baked by Roy Weaver's wife.  Shoo-fly pies were virtually unheard of until Dutch Haven began serving their warm  pies topped with whipped cream to folks.  As word spread and the reputation of the restaurant grew, so did the popularity of the unique Dutch treat.  With increasing tourism, Dutch Haven operated as a restaurant serving distinct Dutch style items such as Pork BBQ, Chicken Corn Soup, black angus steaks, Sauerkraut, “bot boi” (pot pie), Amish-style turkey filling, genuine Amish style root beer and of course their now famous Shoo-Fly Pie was a key attraction.  During a period of declining business, Dutch haven was purchased by the current owner, Paul Stahl, who saved the establishment from an uncertain future by converting it into a craft cooperative by 1993.  Dutch Haven's restaurant no longer operated by then but the shoo-fly pies that were critical to Dutch Haven’s success were still being baked using the same the now famous recipe.  Since then the store has expanded to what visitors see today, specializing in Amish furniture, 10,000 plus unique collectibles and gift items as well as their original Shoo-Fly Pie Recipe.

The term "shoo-fly pie" is thought to have come from the fact that flies were so attracted to the molasses in this pie that they would have to be constantly brushed or "shooed" away.

Today many regular visitors to Lancaster County make Dutch Haven one of their stops while in Amish Country.  Dutch Haven still has many of it's original features of the early years such as paintings by an artist named Vince DeHaven, who's last name bears an eerie coincidence to the name of Dutch Haven itself.  The rooms that once housed dining tables, is now jam packed with a great diversity of over 10,000 items ranging from pottery to a great selection of primitive Amish pine furniture to jellies and jams and woodcrafts.  And, of course, their now famous Shoo-Fly Pie, with between 40,000 to 50,000 baked annually, is a must for anyone who has not sampled this distinctly Amish Treat!

Dutch Haven is open 7 days a week. For more information about Dutch Haven, call 717-687-0111, or visit online at www.dutchhaven.com

Or better yet, visit them in person!  Look for the windmill!

This postcard dating back about 50 years ago shows Dutch Haven as it was at the time.  The building had been expanded with additional rooms and lobby area over the years as well as the addition of the well known landmark revolving wind mill on top.
