Corvette Starters

If you want a high torque and light weight starter, the Denso starters are probably the best. Most of the high torque aftermarket starters are the Denso starters. These starters have been used in variations in Chevys, Subarus, Hondas, and Nissans. Probably others. Some of the parts with the various versions interchange, but some do not. There are a lot of variations of these starters over the years, but all are similar in that the solenoid is in the middle and the motor is outside where most starters are just the opposite.

The Denso starter is a gear reduction starter for high torque. The Corvette version is a great way to add a relatively low buck high torque low weight starter to your V8. Used and on ebay, you can find them cheap. From the parts stores and GM, they range around $150-$190. This is cheaper than the aftermarket companies that charge $220+.

The Corvette '88-'91 used the 168 tooth flywheel and flexplate and the Denso starter. It may of only been used with the L-98 for these years. The engine code is '8'.

The '92-'96 version use the 153 tooth flywheel/flexplate and the Denso starter. It may be that it was only used with the LT-1 for these years and I think the engine VIN code for that is '1', but I'm not sure. This particular starter works well with the Buick 3.8L V6 as well.

The one part I'm not sure on is there are two variations in starter mounting and I forget the details on this. It might be that the mount varies depending on the flywheel size.
