The following pictures, from years ago, demostrate that a pond can be quite unpredictable.  These pictures are right out of Denny's backyard in and around his pond. 

To give you an idea of how deep that hole was, those tires were 33 inch.
  

Here's a side shot. The rear tire is completely out of the water.  Rob later said that he thought the truck was going over and almost bailed out.
  

That's an old 71 scout, completely stock and beat to hell, attempted to pull out the truck but couldn't do it alone.  It wasn't until 4 hours later that Stephen arrived in his CJ-7 and linked up with the Scout to pull out the water logged Ford together.
